Instructor: M. Koehler

Description:  The final course in the MAET program was to create a portfolio that showcases the work that I created as a part of the program. over the course of 20 months, I had the opportunity to create, collaborate, and design new lessons to put in place in my classroom.  Many of these projects were exceptional pieces of work that change the way that I educate my students.  In my opinion, there is no better advertisement or way to display the effectiveness and importance of the MAET program than this portfolio. It's a journey though my education, and shows the process of how I became the teacher that I am. Click the link below to take a look at my personal portfolio.

Description: As teachers change the ways they teach students, and we have the ability to use technology, and multimedia in the classroom, we also change the ways we assess student learning.  No longer are students completing worksheets, giving memorized oral reports or creating poster-boards.  In a time where students are creating dynamic presentations, teachers have to come up with new ways to showcase student achievement. Electronic portfolios allow teachers to share student's work with parents, other educators and the community. Please visit the link below to see some great examples of work my students have completed, and what I teach in my classroom.

Teaching K-12 Students Online

Description:  Ans technology plays a large role in our world, it also plays a larger role in education. Technology has allowed distance learning to flourish. Online collaboration from around the world, and the ability to educate students in different time zones and those with different schedules. In this course, I had the ability to create a fully functional online course to educate students in a summer school course.  The creation of online courses allow, not only students to learn from a distance, and at their own pace, but for students to get the remedial help they need.  Online courses allow students to have a bank of information that is readily available to students. The ability to create an online course, the ability to reach out to children around the district, county or state is a skill that teachers in the future need to possess. Below are some screenshots from my Moodle site, which is unfortunately unavailable to those outside of Jackson County.

Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners

Description :  This course was an elective that I took as part of the MAET program, and was required by the state of Michigan. An integral part of teaching is making sure students learn, but that can be near impossible if there are roadblocks to learning. In this course, I leaned how to diagnose reading disorders faced by every-day students. Native and non native speakers encounter roadblocks to learning that involve reading. By helping students break down these roadblocks, they are able to learn at the pace of other students. This has great implications for students across the board and is something that is now very important in my classroom.

Description:  In this course, we thought about how teaching is different inside and outside the classroom. A main part of it was understanding how to teach outside of the classroom using technologies, and how to make them appealing to your students. There are a few great resources that created in this class that show some fantastic skills that I learned. One is a video discussing a lesson I taught to one of my cousins (you'll have to take a look below) and another one is a great podcast that I created with the help of my dad.  This course was great because it did more than just show you how to make a video, but it showed how to make it well, professional and engaging.

Description:  In this course I had the opportunity to think about how I use technology, and how I integrate it into my classroom. There are many ways that people can use technology - but it's important to apply it correctly in your classroom. One of the keys is that technology must be used missionally, not instrumentally. It's great to have clickers, or smartboards in your classroom, but what is important is that you are using it to accomplish a goal, not just to use it. In this course, we learned how to make smart decisions using technology.

Educational Research

Description:  In this course I learned how to research. Research is difficult, but it made me appreciate the process that published educators go through. My goal in this course was to research the usefulness of laptops in a classroom, specifically how does a 1 to 1 student - laptop ratio effect the quality of education, and the way that students learn.  The results were surprising, but also have great financial implications.  If you're interested, take a look below

Description : The STAIR!  Maybe the most difficult, time consuming but overall most rewarding project I completed as part of the MAET program. This course taught use how to take technology, and adapt it for usage in our classroom in new and exciting ways. The best example of this was the STAIR project, a STand Alone Instructional Resource.  It's a clickable power point lesson that provides feedback depending on how students answer questions. It's a great way to help students learn, and provide feedback that is specific to them. Below, you can download my STAIR and give it a try!

Description : The goal in this course was to identify a problem that I have teaching. Not a skill that needs to be addressed, but a real instructional problem that I could use technology to fix. Through the use of technology I addressed standards in my classroom and taught them in new ways. Through the use of a smart-board, I recreated the way that I teach in my classroom, and taught a very thorough, and detailed unit on Cuba. Click the link above to see some great examples from class on how I used Google Earth and a Smart Board in my classroom. Also, check out some Podcasts that I've created, a really cool skill that I learned in this course too.

Teaching Understanding with Technology

Fall 2010

Description : In my first MAET course, I began to think about different ways to use technology in my classroom. Not just computers, but how to apply a lot of the great things about technology, and web2.0 tools in my class room. In this course I began by creating a blog, and creating presentations that I would use to outline the rest of my time as an MAET student. By thinking about what I really wanted to learn, and how I was going to learn it, I was able to provide myself with a foundation to be successful and make the MAET program worthwhile.
